Just got this at a new coin store I found in San Francisco. I went to Witter Coins at the suggestion of someone on this forum and he had an amazing selection, I went to pick up a seated half originally but just couldn't resist buying this. I payed 19.50 for it. What do you think the grade is?

Looks like a dug coin, and I think I see iron staining on the reverse

I would grade AU-50. Although I would agree with the others; this sort of toning is evident in dug coins and this one seems to have surface corrosion. This coin is worth $10 tops, less if it is a problem coin. You got ripped off IMO.

This is surprising to me. I find the toning quite attractive, even if it is from a dug coin. I also would say that in person, the part of the coin that comes off as looking like rust, is much smoother and just looks like toning, although it's possible it's just my bias, but I think the picture makes it appear more like corrosion than it is. Either way I love the coin and think it's gorgeous. Thanks for all the input people.

Also as a side note, the coin is more of a glossy brown than the black seen here, and the coloration is more blended with the rest of the coins surfaces, I'm still new at the process of photographing my coins. Am I really the only one who finds brown toning on coins attractive?

If you like it, bottom line, that's all that matters. But you're probably in your own boat on this one...

I agree that if you love it that is all that matters but at the same time take heed to the knowledge being shared because you do not want to be spending 2x FMV every time you buy a coin. There are much better options out there if you seek them out.

This coin has AU details due to problem surfaces

If you like it and don't regret your purchase, then I've got nothing to say about it.

But, what I'd suggest is to look for cheaper examples that fit your taste.
You may consider the toning attractive, but it would be determined as problem and unattractive by many others. You can and will find darkly toned Mercs for a lot less than $19.50.

It is good to find and buy the coin that you find attractive, but not really when you have to overpay for something that you will find priced reasonably with a bit of a search.

That "I like it, so I'll buy it no matter the price" attitude gets to be a problem when it gets to more expensive items.
