Circulated commems have been slim pickins for me lately. Seems like it's been forever since I had a downgrade in the 50 piece set or an addition to the 144 set. I have been fortunate to be able to add to the Lafayette grading set. Had it not been for that I would think that the circ commems just got up and left. I'm sure that something will come along. Hopping soon.

Fully concur ... nothing for me as well in the past few months.
The true challenge with this collecting endeavor is market availability ... most of the coins simply did not circulate ... so in our current time finding those rare gems are few and far between.
Somewhere out there is a PO01 Spanish Trail ... waiting to be found.

From what I can tell the Early Commem market has lost any momentum and is sagging a bit. But dealers don't seem to be convinced of that. Their prices are still up.
I first noticed this about 2 years ago at a Whitman show. There were LOTS of Early Commems out for sales including whole tables stacked with them. Hadn't ever seen that many before. My impression was dealers were trying to jump ship while they could.
BTW the CDN seems to agree with my perception. I could fill a LOT of holes if dealers would price accordingly.

It has been VERY slow lately... I guess that's why we like them though, you have to really search and be patient.
Adding a coin to your set is a really satisfying feeling!

We aren't talking about MS commems we are talking about circulated commems. I have never seen tables with whole stacks of them.

Quote: There were LOTS of Early Commems out for sales including whole tables stacked with them. Hadn't ever seen that many before. My impression was dealers were trying to jump ship while they could. I've been a collector of US commemorative coins for about 20 years. Throughout that time, there has always been a ready supply of the coins available at all of the bigger regional coin shows (such as the current Whitman shows). The "stacked" tables you refer to aren't really a new phenomena for dealers that have specialized in the series, I've been stopping at such tables throughout my collecting years. What I have noticed is that when the series' popularity is lagging - such as it is now - some dealers hold back their nicer coins because they do not want to sell them at lower prices. They would prefer to move their lesser inventory during the slow times and keep their "gems" for when the market is hot. I would guess that at any given time, there are less than 500 collectors seriously working on assembling a set of US commemoratives - either a Type Set or a Complete 144-Piece Set. It doesn't take a large number of dealers specializing in the series to service this small group. Quote: We aren't talking about MS commems we are talking about circulated commems. I have never seen tables with whole stacks of them. All commemorative discussions are welcome! I haven't seen stacks of the super low commemorative coins you are pursuing, but I have encountered dealers with a good selection of XF / AU coins over the years.

I saw the threads about the guys collecting low-grade "lowball" sets and I have to admit that the idea of these coins in Barber-like condition is intriguing! Some of those ghostly cameo G and below coins posted on here recently are things I wouldn't mind having. There have to be very few surviving circ worn examples of these premium coins out there.
The fear I have is that in the present environment, uneducated people will spot these in the attic in Grandma's old chest and away to the melting pot they will go for quick $$$, making it even harder to find them. Maybe that is what is happening to the market.
I would love to score several of them but because of the surviving population issues, the fever for melt Ag, and my own limited funds, I would not ever attempt a full set... maybe a Stone Mountain with the "Memorial To..." phrase worn smooth, or the like. The AG Lincoln I saw pictured here almost took my breath away with its cameo effect.

Quote: I would not ever attempt a full set... Part of the fun of collecting coins - at least for me - is the challenge of the hunt and sense of accomplishment when I complete a set. We all have to choose what makes sense for our own situation, however. Good luck with whatever avenue you pursue!

It is a challenge and like commems said that is part of the fun. And along the way it's great to meet like minded collectors that help each other out.

Saw a VG Spanish Trail at the Austin show last weekend. The cardboard flip was marked $325. I really wanted to ask about it, but I had already spent my cash and didn't want to annoy the dealer since I didn't have enough money left to seriously consider it.

If this was a legit VG Spanish Trail $325 would be a steal.

Well I did manage to acquire a PCGS AU58 Texas for my 144 set. It's a definite plus for me when I can find a circ commem already graded. Now only 59 more to finish that set. :)

Still trying to track down the dealer from the Round Rock show... haven't heard back from the show sponsor yet.
