Has anyone removed the uncirculated. 50 cent clad from their 5 star gen. profile set to get it graded/slabbed? If so, what success or failures? Just wondering if it is worth it or not, or perhaps have the whole set graded.

Let me add some new info to this query. Per PCGS coin price list the 5 star generals clad half dollar in MS70 is worth $100.00, yet the regular issue clad half in MS70 is worth nearly $1,000.00 What is this about? Why is the 5 star profile set half so different? Does it have anything about it that IS different?

No, I meant the 5 star ( Arnold / Bradley ) clad half from the mint, but not part of the set.

I wouldn't try to pop coins out of that set. Both of those coins seem to be in demand and the medal makes a nice addition. I'm leaving the set alone, it's very nice.

Quote: No, I meant the 5 star ( Arnold / Bradley ) clad half from the mint, but not part of the set. They are the same coin, so the value should not matter if you bought it part of the set or singly. I know TPGs have their gimmicks with labels and what not, but I give no value to any of their shenanigans. My value is for the coin, not the slab.

Mine as well, I was thinking of pulling the clad half 5 star from the Profile set until I noticed the diff. in the appraised or slabbed value, now I am not so sure. I guess PCGS would be able to tell the difference based on the original mint plastic holder. Soo.. if I were to do it I would have to take them out of their mint holders in put them in the standard PCGS 2X2 in flips. Then I have the conundrum of not having a complete 5 star profile set. Any suggestions out there?

Yes, keep the set intact! It is a fine set, in my opinion (I love mine). The potential gain in value is not worth it, because you are assuming this will grade MS-70; it very well may not.

Good point, I'll do as you would, keep my sets intact. Thanks for the feedback.

goldbill - it is a gamble to send a coin to a TPG'er. You can score big with a MS70, but most likely the coin will come back with a lower grade than expected. When I buy OGP coins, I keep them in their OGP packaging. When I want a graded coin, I'll buy a pre-graded coin.
