Hi , I am new to this forum so hope this is ok. My partner has some coins that he has had since he was little , and on one of the 1918 George v pennies, M M is stamped on the front. Does anyone know why , I have suggested someone may have for some reason stamped it on at a later date for whatever reason but just thought this would be the place to ask ! Thank you

from what I understand, this could be for lots of reasons, many of these coins were defaced in such a way to promote brands, political issues or were even sometimes done as 'love tokens', this could be the initials of a couple alive in the early 1900's. It is the same initials as myself and my girlfriend :)

From the CCF Glossary

Quote:
counterstamp
A stamp or impression placed on a coin after it has left the Mint of origin. Counterstamps were frequently used as advertising gimmicks on large cents and other coins. The counterstamp leaves a permanent impression on the metal and may hurt the value of the coin. It may also help the value, as in the case of an Ephriam Brasher counterstamp.

Mcstone was also correct.
