There's been a lot of discussion of the 3 cent nickel on this forum recently...just thought I'd share one that I find interesting. There is a bit of doubling on the obverse, most readily seen in the AM of America. But of more interest is the degree of die rotation. The third picture, of the reverse, shows this die rotation. I carefully fipped the coin from obverse to reverse to maintain it's relative orientation. I would grade this coin VF-30 at the worst, and possibly EF-40. The beads in the coronet are not all clearly distinct, and the lines in the numeral are arguably complete, and the leaves show plenty of detail. The coin has some accumuated grime (as seen at the base of the AM) but this does not appear to be corrosion, IMO.

1874 is a cool year for 3CN...definitely! It looks like an XF+ by the photos.

The doubling you're seeing is basically on the master hub and is common throughout the 3CN series. It doesn't make it any less interesting, but it is on many of the 3CN you'll find. I have the information in Gifford's book on which hubs have which type of doubling but it is too much detail to put in this thread.

There are all sorts of rotations on various examples throughout the mintages of the coins from 1865-1889. I'm not sure how common it was in 1874 but it's always neat to discover them when you find them. Sometimes the rotation can be used as a point of reference to determine exactly which dies were used to strike you coin.
