All:

This camera has a 10x optical zoom, 12.1 MP.

Is this sufficient to use with the camera lens for some low - middle range coins?

Are there any tips you could share?

Thanks!

I have used a Canon Powershot A630 8.0 mega pixels prior to moving to a bellows system. Camera took some pretty nice pics for a hand held. I had best luck shooting outside using natural sunlight with the macrofocus setting and utilizing zoom lens. I still use this camera to take full shots of entire coin slab.
Rest in Peace

I'm not familiar with the ELPH 330 but I use an older Canon A620 (7.1 mp) with decent results. The really nice feature about it is I can tether it to my lap top to shoot pictures. The only tip I can offer is to search the photography section.

I think you will be able to get some good pictures from that camera. It has Canon's HS (high sensitivity) system which includes a CMOS image sensor and so is higher end as far as point and shoot cameras go. Not in the SLR class of course, but good.

I have a Canon SX260HS which has similar internals and have been able to get pretty good pictures. Good lighting and white balance are key.

It's worth trying. In typical Canon fashion, this camera has a minimum focusing distance of less than half an inch, so you can get as close to the coin as necessary. Unfortunately, it's going to be necessary because it probably won't allow you to use the zoom in Macro mode. You'll need the lens zoomed to its' widest.

So, the basics: Camera and coin perfectly parallel, preferably with the camera facing straight down onto the coin. Solid camera mount, allowing no shake. Delayed shutter so you don't unintentionally move the camera when the shutter snaps.

You'll probably need the camera no more than 6" from any given coin and likely much less. This makes lighting somewhat problematic. So shoot us a couple pics and we'll see what we can do.
