Would need pictures before making an estimate on value. But an 1842 1/2 Sov is quite a find. Looking forward to it.

Here is the catalogue entry for the 1842 half-sovereign. Granted, it's an American catalogue, and prices actually obtained for them in Britain might vary. But notice that there's only US$150 worth of gold in a half-sov right now, and the catalogue prices start at US$450 in fairly well circulated condition. So assuming its time underground and the process of excavation has not damaged it, it should indeed be worth considerably more than its gold content. How much more, we really do need to see some nice clear pictures in order to guess.

Quite a difference between vf and ef. About £150 for a vf about £500 for a ef, anything of a lower grade bullion value. I don't think anyone could grade from those photos unfortunately. Great find well done.
