Hi all, I've been collecting for years but have just only really started seriously. Could anyone grade and value this sovereign, it would be really helpful. Thanks.

I'd say Fine, and it looks like the close 2 variety. Collectors' Coins GB says £300 but that could vary based on the price of gold.

The money is in the BV maybe a little more as it is an early vickie. The open 2 is the more valueable version (as in the farthing series which used the same dies)

Thanks very much guys. I paid £400 for it on ebay, starting to think that may have been a bit too much.

Don't beat yourself up over paying too much for a coin. Every collector has done that- multiple times. The key is to learn as you go and enjoy the coins you have.

Grade is F, value is bullion value + 15%.
Actually, I am looking for British HALF sovereign somewhere between 1825 and about 1850.
Newly minted British coins began to be imported into Australia on a regular basis after 1825, to supply the circulation requirements of the Australian colonies. From 1855, Australia produced the Sydney Mint sovereigns and halves.
As such, British coins are also an integral part of Australian coinage history. I do not have a British gold coin of this period in my collection, and nice ones are hard to find in Australia.

I finally DID manage to find a British half sovereign of the period 1825 to 1855. Like the sovereign pictured above, it is of the same date, and in about the same condition.
It is the only gold coin in my collection that represents this part of early Australian numismatic history, and that is the reason why I am reasonably happy with it, although it is a coin that perhaps not too many would get particularly excited about. I suspect that my coin saw all of it's circulation experience in Australia, but there is no way to prove it.
I have quite a few British silver and bronze coins of the period 1825 - 1855 that includes an 1844 crown, and an almost complete range of half crown types George 11 - Elizabeth 11. My son has an almost complete range of British shilling types Charles 11 - Elizabeth 11.
