Hey guys, I had to create an account just to share my purchase I made today from Craigslist! I just started collecting silver a few weeks ago, and have mainly been focusing on coin-roll hunting. Without luck, I have gone through approximately $2500 in dimes and quarters from my local banks and have made zero finds. I decided to scan Craigslist for any silver coins that were going for a reasonable price. My goal was to find a few silver dollars, or maybe a couple of coin sets for 95% of spot value. I noticed that Craigslist is flooded with dealers trying to dump their coins for ridiculous prices and buy silver for dirt cheap from unsuspecting people who just want to get rid of their coins. I was a bit discouraged by this.
Late last night, I noticed a new ad for 40 mint sets (5x 62', 10x 64' and 25x 67'). I contacted the buyer as fast as I could, and made an offer of $800 (20 per set). I knew this was a lowball offer, but I was hoping to negotiate to the point where I could buy them for spot value. This would have been around $920, and I knew that the mint sets could be sold for a pretty profit on
ebay. (Currently my local coin shop was selling the 67' sets for $35, and the 64'/62' sets for ~$55.)
The seller contacted me back the next morning, and said that I was the only person who had made an offer and thus was willing to sell them for $800. I was SHOCKED when I saw the reply. At first I thought there may have been something fishy going on (perhaps stolen coins), but I decided to go ahead with it. I met the individual at a local mall and sure enough, I was shown 40 MINT sets in their original packaging. I happily handed over my $800 and walked away.
So, what do you guys think? I would love to start stacking silver but I am not sure if the mint sets are where it's at. Do you think I should sell these on
ebay and focus on buying junk (circulated) silver coins, or investing in maple leafs etc?
Also, what do you guys think I could realistically get for the 40 sets? Are the 62' and 64' worth quite a bit more than the 67's?
Thanks for reading and I look forward to learning some more about collecting from everyone on this site!
