I see the D-Day is awaiting stock, but I do not see a dedicated thread about this coin.
What is everyone's opinion on the coin?
I like that King George VI is on the coin that's why I purchased one.

I also liked the coin but I don't believe it's awaiting stock forever as in my opinion the mintage is too high and it will be available at a discount later on. It reminds me of the colored nanaboozhoo coin it was awaiting stock for quite a bit and then came in stock and still instock

I did not buy one.
I find the face of the soldier to be poorly executed and not very realistic - it detracts greatly from the overall design IMO.
The human face is one of the toughest things to capture well on a coin. I don't know if the issue is with the original artwork or with the transfer to the master die. Regardless, I just don't find its design appealing.

Absolutely agree here with Commemms regarding soldier's face, and told the same. Wish, they've chosen something else to capture for the reverse.
But I did order the coin, since the effigy of the King George VI improved overall impression, and I find D-Day operation as one of the important events, that lead to the Victory. While I didn't buy nothing related to the mobilization theme, this one (D-Day) didn't want to miss.

I ordered one for the same reasons as Silveroid.
I'm also hoping that the soldier's face will look a lot better on the real coin, as is often the case with the mint's graphic illustrations.

My picture doesn't do it justice but the reverse is quite nice - even the soldiers face. Unfortunately, the obverse, which has drawn some of us to the coin, is not well done at all. The frosting is comical and poor George has virtually no facial features. adding a second photo:

Ya the mints frosting jobs are just terrible on some coins, I wish they would either not use it on the busts or improve it so it doesn't ruin the look of the bust. You would think by now they would know that its crappy...

Thank for sharing CC-Ottawa.
Too heavy frosting but need to say - due to it, the details of the soldier's face aren't so visible (the same, unfortunately for the obverse), making the overall picture more attractive.
Need to add, personally, after seeing the "Save Private Ryan", I can't imagine the scene other way, only as it was shown in the first minutes of the movie.

Thanks for the pics, CC! I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. In the meantime I'm reserving final judgment until I have it in hand. P.S. If you don't like the frosting on George, can't you just let it sit out in the sun?

Hopefully the frosting issue can be seen with a comparison of a 2006 War Memorial coin with the current 2014. There is considerably more detail in the Queen's face than the King's. As for the reverse, I'm not sure there is much more than be done to engrave a human face on a coin. Short of using stickers or paint, I really don't expect a life-like image.

Also the frosting jobs are quite sloppy as well if you view them under a scope, maybe I am just too fussy and should not be looking at NCLTs under a scope, but then I say why the heck not? I pay $100 to $700 for a "new" coin its should be almost perfect, but that is just not the case when they put the frosting on, its not lined up with the edges properly , the non frosted coins look much better under a scope.
Ok that's my rant of the day lol.

Can anyone explain how the frosting is achieved on the coins? The queen always looks like she has a rash. I like how it was done in the '80's.

I received my D day coin. The history matters a great deal and anything, even something so simple as a coin that in the future may cause someone to pause and reflect has value.
Sadly the coin is not well excecuted.
