It appears that the lake behind the prospector did not appear on the coin Sorry about the pics - really hard to get rid of the reflection

do you mean, that looks like, the lake is there, but instead to be wavy, it has flat mirrored surface?
Correct?

I bet they are all the same as your coin. The depictions used on the RCM web site are artist illustrations. Fairly often, the actual coins look a bit different than the illustrations. Generally, I've found the coins look better in hand than on the web site.

Just a big mirrored rectangle where the lake is supposed to be

This is very true. I have found that in most of these cases, the actual coins look much better in person. The recent D-Day 70th anniversary coin is a good example. Many folks were worried that the soldier's face in the foreground would look bad, but on the real coin it came out very well.

I would think lucv13, that on your Gold Rush coin the lake is supposed to look smooth. Perhaps it was just a very calm day when these coins were minted.

Yesterday, finally got the D-day coin.

Yes, it good in personal, still could be done better.

So, the coin also has element of the water, wavy water. This makes me curious to find the "Gold Rush" coin in the display and to see.
