Hey everyone Just wanted to share my very first ancient purchase. It is a Macedonian Tetradrachm of Alexander the Great. Minted at the great capital of Pella between 325 and 315 BC. It's reference is Price 210A and is only one of six varieties to have the aforementioned attributes. Overall exceptionally happy with it and would like to sincerely thank Numismatik Lanz and Hubert Lanz for all the help rendered to me. On the second part of an interesting story. I showed the picture of the coin to my grandfather and asked him if he knew what it was. He said immediately it was a coin of Alexander the Great. He also told me back in Macedonia where he grew up and worked on the farm he would occasionally find the coins in the fields. Thanks everyone

That is one beautiful coin! The condition is outstanding. I don't think I've ever seen one where the eyelash is visible. It must have cost you a small fortune. Congrats.

Grampa didn't finish that story by saying they would put them on the railroad tracks for fun did he?

Thanks everyone and you are absolutely right enchizento It will cost me about $1600-1650 AUD after exchange rates, postage, goods and services tax, customs declarations and the coin itself. Took me 104 hours of working casual at Woolworths to afford this beauty but worth it. On what he did with them I didn't get around to asking him but being as nationalistic as he is I don't think he would have put them on the railroad tracks haha but when I next see him I will ask him what he did with them.

That is one heck of an outlay for the first ancient coin for a collection...

Very nice! What a great way to start your collection. I watched a few hours of the recent Lanz auction and chased after one coin but lost to a floor bidder (no, I wasn't bidding on the EID MAR ). It was an interesting auction. Dr. Lanz called the auction himself and he speaks in a mix of German and English, sometimes in the same sentence or number: "vier tausend two hundert".

WOW. Good choice right out of the gate. I see this coin has some special connection with your heritage. That is priceless. Only a few coins of my ancestors exist. The mainly landed in distant land and took whatever they could carry.

Be careful when you tell Grandpa how much you paid for it, and him throwing away all those coins......

Sorry to bother everyone but if anyone has dealt with Numismatik Lanz could you please tell me how you access your invoice is it via the Internet or mail or what? If it means anything I am outside Germany and placed my bid via sixbid. Thanks everyone for your help.
