Hey guys, I just acquired this old one in a bag of stuff. I've spent over a week tearing the net apart but I'm no further ahead.... Leading theories are it was modified for either a military unit or a masonic lodge. Or fingers crossed this may have been a mint test strike. The face is in beautiful condition and the embossed "M" is too well done to be hand embossed, but not well done enough to be something meant for circulation

It's a love token. One side of the coin is sanded off and initials or even scenes are hand engraved on the coin. I do this as a sub hobby of coin collecting.

I agree, love token, more commonly done with silver coins. The maker must have been too cheap to give his love a silver coin, wonder if she appreciated his frugality and this relationship ended in marriage.

Some of these love tokens can be quiet elaborate. There is a good collectors market for them. We sold one not long ago made on a US Trade dollar. Sold for over $100 USD. Love tokens on a Canadian dime (depending on the design, obv and condition) will fetch between $10-$40. Higher denominations more since they are more scarce.

As the others said, this is a love token. They;re more common with silver or gold as "copper" was cheap at the time.
