There's a local auction here with forgeries (in separate lots) of 1) An 1873 Seated Liberty dollar2) An 1821 half dollar both in VG condition. I think they're made out of tin or lead and I think they're contemporary forgeries. I collect forgeries of British and French coins but I haven't got any of US coins. How common are contemporary forgeries ? What is a reasonable price to pay for them ?

What makes you think their contemporary counterfeits and not just Chinese junk? Note the large weight difference between tin and lead. A silver Seated dollar weighs approximately 26 grams.

I own (2) 1877 half dollars. Both are contemporary counterfeits. This one is a fairly common example. I paid $20 and $3.
You should add contemporary counterfeit Spanish (and colonies) coins to your list.

Quote: What makes you think their contemporary counterfeits and not just Chinese junk? All the Chinese junk that I've seen has either been copper-nickel or debased silver, and in EF or MS grade; good enough to fool an inexperienced collector. These are neither, good enough to fool a drunk man in a dimly-lit bar, but not any sort of collector.

If they're true contemporary counterfeits, they could (depending on their make) be worth anywhere between $2 and $200. The variety really matters, and most pricing with counterfeits (modern and contemporary) is based upon novelty.

That's good to know.
My anti-virus warned me not to go to xa.yimg.com - hidden malware.
I'm not saying that jerseyben knows that; his images are probably just images - but it seems there may be something dodgy on the website.
