Given that the Barbadian dollar is pegged to the US dollar at 2:1, I'm surprised a coin worth half a US cent has lasted this long.

Some governments just like to waste money on making currency that is not worth near what the metal costs. Chile was making 1 peso coins until 2012 that were worth between 1/5th and 1/10th of a US cent.
