Does anybody have any idea what's going on with these pennies. In the 1977 the Queen's hair seems smudged. And in the '79 the denticles on both sides at the top of the penny are missing. Is this wear? Thanks.

I think they may both be examples of minting through some grease, or perhaps a partial weak strike? from your photos, it does not look like PMD, but I am not the expert.

I have a 1977 similar to yours except it's not misaligned. It's even got some finning on the right of the obverse and on the bottom of the reverse like yours. I've always assumed it's die overpolishing because it only affects the lowest areas of the relief.

I agree with the other coins being a Struck Through Grease.

Considering both sides are involved in the same spot, I think the 1979 was slightly lifted within the collar due to the hammer die nicking the bottom of the rim and tilting the top upward resulting as an incomplete strike on both sides. IMO

Which die is the hammer die for pennies?

If the planchet was lifted wouldn't the face that got lifted have a stronger strike than the opposite? Or might it be a tapered planchet instead? It looks quite plausible to me from the pics.

Reverse is hammer die in Canada, Obverse in the US

Thanks pennyman and Slur. So...if I were to describe the error in each would I say Incomplete Strike on the '79 and Struck Through Grease on the '77? Too simple?
