I picked this up on ebay recently. I love the detail in the devices, but the large deep gash in the obverse field (between L and D) and the disgusting rim are a little off-putting.

How does the rim/field damage lead you to grade this?

How does a coin get into such awful condition in such a short time for circulation ?

Apart from the gouges and the edge, I grade it GVF, ie between VF and EF.

I might be a lone voice in the wilderness but I don't discount the grade by the damage, that's too simplistic.

If I were buying the coin, I'd expect the seller to describe the non-grade damage accurately.

I think I would prefer a coin graded GF with no edge damage or gouges.

I hope that helps.

I'm just a bit curious: how can the edge be so mutilated without seeing so little wear on the actual head?
