Greetings!

Just joined the forum, new to the world of coin collecting, but learning lots every day. Basically, I'm helping my stepfather go through his various collections from stamps to coins to pens to figure out what might be worth selling, so that we can fund a return vacation for him to Germany where he lived in the '60s!

He has a few British India Silver Rupee coins, mostly between 1912-1920. When he bought these coins twenty-thirty years ago, he painstakingly cut out little squares of white paper and inserted them between the coins before creating rolls of the coins and wrapping them all in paper.

You can probably guess what happened! Each coin sadly has a square outline on it. I am not sure whether it is because something from the paper has affected the surface, or whether that area has just faded differentially due to the paper blocking contact with the air.

So here are my questions.

1) The coins have NOT been cleaned in any way. Is there any way of wiping the coin to try and address this square patch paper related patch / fading WITHOUT turning it into an unacceptably cleaned coin?

2) I went through the NGC site, and noticed they have a "Details Grading" system for coins that can't be given an NGC number. Assuming there is nothing that can be done in terms of removing the square patch, how would a coin like this be graded? And by how much would it reduce its sale value?

I have attached a picture as an example. I look forward to your advice!

Cheers
Satish

It seems that the pieces of paper caused the coins to tone differently than the rest of the coin. Some collectors may find this toning pattern more interesting or attractive and may pay a premium for it. Others may view it negatively and would pay less than a normally toned coin.

Do not alter the surfaces in any way. That will hurt the value.

From my experience, the differences in coloring from the pieces of paper alone will not give the coin a details grade if sent in for grading. There would have to be other problems with the coin to give it a details grade. All coins have colored and toned differently based on the storage methods used and the environments they have been kept in. Yours is a little more unique than others, but it won't be held against you by the TPGs unless it is more dramatic or involved tampering with the coin.

The coins have a natural color to them that some collectors would enjoy. The color pattern probably isn't ideal, but I wouldn't expect it to impact the value too much.

That's a relief to hear, thank you both!

Next, I need to practice my coin grading skills. Will do some research, then post a couple with my thoughts on the grade, and see if people concur.

Cheers
