I don't think I would ever buy gold from someone off craigslist. I can easily see how a scam like this can happen.

Anything off of craigslist should get an automatic acid test. They do look very good from far away. It's the luster that fools people.
Inside the capsules and such they look very good. Up close, not so good. I would probably just meet up with the guy, take a picture of him and walk to the nearest PS. The luster is quite good from far away.
I'd be interested to see the plastic sleeving up close and personal just out of curiosity. If you can identify the packaging once it will save you many times over, as the mint usually would not use a cheap/current form of packaging, no?

Another good reason to buy .999 fine: you can bend the coin to test it.

Even if one of the members here wished to take part in such a transaction, never go to an unknown seller's place of residence. If someone of a criminally inclined persuasion were to know in advance that a potential buyer was coming to a place of his choosing, and carrying enough hard currency to buy gold, this scenario fulfills the majority of prerequisites for a robbery/assault/murder.
Bottom line: Always go to a neutral site, preferably a public venue, for virtually any Craigslist deal, just to be on the safe side. Also, the better the deal typically sounds, when the dust finally settles, the worse it will ultimately be for you. It's the inverse proportion rule for doing business on Craigslist.

Here's where some of these are coming from, they are gold plated tungsten so the weight will be close to genuine coins. ht tp://w ww.alibaba.com/product-detail/33-93-grams-22k-gold-plated_752896216.html (you'll have to take the space out between ht tp and w ww to get the link to work) I for one will not buy anything from Alibaba, the Chinese version of ebay and Amazon. From the listing: Specifications
1)Dimensions and weight is as original 2)Many pcs in stock 3)The thickness of gold can be customized 4)New mold available Details33.93 grams 22k gold plated american gold eagle material-tungsten craft-casting/plating etc. color-golden usage-souvenir/gift/display advantages-high quality and reasonable price, over 20 years plating experience delivery-as soon as the order placed, many products in stock

Even the cheaper gold-plated copper ones are getting good enough to fool casual inspection. There's been a real uptick in fake Gold Eagles lately.

Those are the first UGLY St Gauden's that I've ever seen. That guy should be spanked just for raping The Master's design. Very nasty looking coins. I think that I'm feeling a bit Ill
