Oh they are new, just made from the silver recovered from the wreck is all.

"Having left Freetown behind, the fleet encountered rough Atlantic surf and high winds. The S.S. Gairsoppa began to run low on coal, the fuel needed to reach her destination. The captain was forced to steer a new and more direct course for port in order to refuel. As she headed homeward toward the Isles, she was reported by a German Focke-Wulf aircraft which signaled a U-Boat in the area to find her. The U-Boat torpedoed the S.S. Gairsoppa on February 17, 1941 and it sank with its rich cargo. The ship sank roughly 300 miles to the southwest of Galway and rested 3 miles deep beneath the surface of the forlorn Atlantic waters."

"In 2010, the British government and Florida-based Odyssey Marine Exploration entered into a venture to find the sunken ship and possibly recover its 110 tons of precious silver from the wreck. Their success has resulted in the nearly complete recovery of this silver which has since been sent to the Sunshine Mint to be transformed into these elegant commemorative silver bars that represent one of the most unforgettable periods of world history"

I'd buy it as a neat piece of history, not bullion. Small premium considering the history involved.

If it was a piece of silver, cut from the original bars, I'd be interested in them as a small piece of history.
As of what it is now, I wouldn't buy it. It's just a silver round now, made from silver that was recovered from underwater.

I'm not sure on total ounces given to Royal Mint to use for these, but, it was NOT a large amount..they didn't want to flood the market..I have both VER-1 & 2 10oz bars, and, both coins...raw from 2013, and, NIB, with recovery DVD, 2014..willing to pay premium for the history, and, all the work involved hauling from 3 miles deep..plus, I suppose, in a way, how do you put a price on the lives lost, when the torpedoes did it's damage? I wonder how the living relatives feel about all of this?..aka..Twin Tower Coins found in debris, and, sold now..a very odd collecting tangent..coins/bullion related to the deceased...

I bought 1 tenner, I thought it was a neat bar to own, and I have largely moved away from stacking silver, so this piece really stands out in my collection.

Does anyone know if the Gairsoppa silver rounds are made of %100 Gairsoppa recovered silver or do they just contain "some" Gairsoppa silver in each round? The adds I have seen seem to parse this question very closely. They use words like "made of", "made from", "made with", but I have never seen anywhere where they state "made of %100 Gairsoppa recovered silver.

Thanks,

Bob

Pretty sure its 100% from the wreck, as you said I cant find anywhere where they actually say it in those words, I dont think they need to bring any in from elsewhere, they recovered just about 100 Tones of it.

Thanks for the replys. A hundred tons of silver is indeed quite a bit. As you said they probably don't need to use additional silver from other sources, but as you know, if they don't state that it's guaranteed to contain %100 Gairsoppa silver it could just as well be sprinkled with a bit of fairy dust and call it good.
