The 30th anniversary of the ASE is coming up in 18 months.

I think it is time to change the current classic coin, and that the 30th anniversary would be a great opportunity to make the change.

I have read many threads where other members want to replace the reverse's heraldic eagle designed by John Mercanti.

I like the heraldic eagle, it was designed for this coin and it should stay.

With obverse being borrowed from the classic Liberty Walking half dollar this design has now been minted for 59 years! IMO it is time to change the obverse so it has a unique design that is designed for the American Silver Eagle and not borrowed from a coin in the past. One advantage to this plan would be that the obverse can be changed every year, just like the reverse on the APE.

Any thought or comments?

Personally I think mints just need to stick to , 25, 50 , 75, 100 anniversary's, anything else is just a marketing ploy,

While I agree with both replies, I think the Mint will want to cash-in on any opportunity they can with limited edition sets.

I agree with the OP. The old (emphasis on old) design is stale and dated, IMO. Many other mints change their obverse sides yearly. I'm not advocating that sort of an extreme (though it wouldn't bother me), but changing the design every decade or so seems like a reasonable proposition. Really, what's the downside?

What the ASE has going for it is: its fame. It's recognizable everywhere. Change it and it loses that. Would the older coins still sell at the same premiums or higher?

Anything would be an improvement over the endless different finishes, it's boring.

I have read a few articles about next years design being different for american silver eagles.
Here is one I found:
