My wife and I share all our finances with a single joint bank account, so instead of buying each other expensive gifts for birthdays and Christmas we each just agree to "let" the other one buy something nice for themselves (and by "let" I mean promise not to complain or criticize or argue about the purchase). Last year, my wife let me buy this for my birthday for around $500:

Got-A-Birthday-Coming-Up...

A couple of months ago, for her birthday, I let her get a 1/2 carat princess-cut solitaire diamond in an 18K setting that she found for $800.

Well, my birthday is in a couple of weeks and I've been thinking about what I should get. I've really been jonesin' for some more classic proof coins (perhaps a proof Barber half dollar in MS62-63 for around $1000).

Unfortunately, my computer's motherboard fried yesterday and I had to spend $800-900 to get a new computer. And then today I had to bring my car to the shop and will likely need to spend another $500 to get it repaired. So now I'm basically thinking this year I'll just keep looking at the coin from last year and appreciating how beautiful it is. Besides, Christmas is coming up...

First off, if you buy a proof coin in MS, there is something wrong.

Secondly, are you guys able to afford a $1000 purchase after what has happened recently? If there are doubts, let the coin go. As you said, there's always Christmas.

Sorry to hear about your mother board. Why did you get a new computer? To old, could have picked up a new MB for 150-180 USD.

Just a thought.

...and, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Let's see...

Yes, I meant PR62-63.

I tell my wife that, since I can always resell the coins when I retire, it's OK to take money out of our retirement fund to buy coins. So far, she believes that I would ever actually consider reselling my coins.

My computer was running Windows XP, so I was due for an update anyway. The new system has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with 8 GB of RAM and Microsoft Office 2010 (which matches the configuration of my work computer so I didn't need to worry about figuring out how to use it in a hurry). I've heard horror stories about Windows 8 and Office 2013, so I was happy to pay less money and get a slightly used computer with the software I wanted.

Well, I'm not a fan of Win 8 and run 7 pro myself. I put together a computer for $1000.00 dollars with Win 8, 16 GB ram, 2 2 GB graphics cards running SLI, 1 TB HD, 1000 watt power supply, case, dual fan water cooler, i5 overclocked CPU, mother board, dvd burner. So it can be done. I added a 27 in 3D monitor to take full advantage of my SLI config for another 240 dollars as well.
This was early last year.

Not everything is the latest and greatest.

I would have paid WELL over 2 grand if I would have tried to buy it at a store without the monitor.

Just saying there is more then one way to skin a cat and have leftovers to boot.

Just like coins, gotta shop around.

Any way, Have a Great birthday!
