These two capped bust dimes dimes sold recently, one an obvious 1833, the other described as an 1822. I came upon this listing yesterday and was surprised by the final sale price. Unfortunately, I think the buyer will not be happy with his purchase - the 1822 (and I think that is what attracted the buyers) is clearly not an 1822, but a later date, closed-collar dime dated 1832 in my opinion. The 3rd digit in the date is worn just enough to make it look like a 2. Could be an honest mistake by the seller, that is possible. However, a comparison with a genuine example quickly reveals the difference. The 1822 dime is a very scarce date (1 die variety only for the year, R-4, approximately 200 known), any example is valuable. Buyers should be alert and know what they are buying as mistakes can be costly.
What really surprises me in this case is not the selling part, but rather how easily some collectors part with their money, without doing some checking and comparing first. This coin is so patently not an 1822 dime.
