This forum is for precious metals. Please remove this thread if it is unfit to be here.

Does anyone here have any experience collecting jade, especially that from British Columbia? Or just in general?

Pete,

It's a good question. I'm just a novice, myself, and still at the level where I can't tell the real from the fake. I've bought a few pieces off ebay. Hopefully, the sellers didn't exploit my ignorance. The one member that I know around here who could probably answer your question is libertad. You might want to drop him an email if he doesn't respond soon. Here's his info:

Here's a few I've recently purchased. I think they're all jade but far from sure, and wouldn't be surprised at all if they weren't. The sterling in each piece I've verified.

Traevin,
Here's what I personally know about jade:
Since I come from China, I am absolutely paranoid about fake minerals. Knowing that the jade from BC is probably authetic, I have recently been trying to collecting information about the market value of different qualities of this mineral.
ebay might be a good place to start, but I have met vendors there who sell fake jade. Keep in mind that jade comes in very large pieces and there should really nver be a junction point on any item you've purchased.
I also heard that the quality of the jadecomes from its darkness and eveness of colour.

I believe without seeing the jade in hand is taking a big risk when buying, if for a few dollars and looks fine, then keep it as souvenir, otherwise it needs to be inspected personally. I have seen many jade and touch it, good qualities are translucent and barely has any stress cracks when viewing under light source.

There are ones that are artificially colored and after certain time of wearing will fade, if one get the chance, you will have to examine genuine jades from reputable jade jewelers and avoid buying fakes.
