Much appreciated jcm, I swear I have looked at every coin on line with either lyre or kithara. Nothing with a standing figure has shown up.

Never thought of that chrsmat. Had a quick look online, can't see anything that looks similar, but there is not much to look at. Some reference talk of lead tokens, this is not lead. There are references to bronze tokens, but the couple of examples not like this one.

I will have to look into this further. No computer for the next couple of days, after tonight, I will be back Friday.

Pish,

The reverse is specific to Lycian League coinage from the mint of Limyra. As I'm sure you know from your research, this reverse type (the lyre presented within the incuse square, with Greek lettering around) is typical of some Lycian silver denominations.

Your type is a match for these:

It's hard to make out the upper inscription on the reverse of yours, in part due to the small image you provide " but also since it looks worn. But I'm betting it's the Lycian League's ΛΥΚΙΩΝ, which is standard for these types. And, more importantly, the mint is provided: the Λ-Ι to either side of the lyre/kithara are the city initials for Limyra. (the coins linked to, above, are all of Limyra, and thus have that same abbreviation)

So it would seem the reverse of your coin "purports" to be of Limyra. Whether it actually IS of Limyra (perhaps official but undocumented?), or whether it is an ancient unofficial imitative from somewhere else or a modern tourist fake " I can't say. Once I step outside the world of Parthian and Elymaean numismatics I'm on shaky ground.

Bob

Thanks Bob. I had seen the coins from Limyra, but dismissed them because of no standing figure. The plot thickens. I dismissed rjscoins suggestion that it might be silver. Since then I have scraped some of the dirt away from the edge and it is coming up a silvery colour instead of the expected bronze. I can't do anything over the next couple of days, so I am leaving it to soak in DW and will have another look when I get back on Friday.

The lettering within the incuse square looks worn. Not sure what the figure is holding, possibly a bow. I will try and get some better photographs on my return.
