I don't think it's a TPG per se, but it is reminiscent of the very early efforts.

It is a green type-written card with "U. S. Silver Dollar Society" as the title, the date and mintage, a paragraph about Bland-Allison and the signature of an "Advisor".

The coin is in a flip, with the details and a ?serial number? on the 2x2 insert. The 2x2 is taped to the larger card, but it's not sealed.

Ring any bells? Anyone know anything?

That's the first I've ever seen of this type of catalog and I've never heard of the U.S. Silver Dollar Society. There is a similar named group, the "Society of Silver Dollar Collectors" (SSDC) in Casselberry, Florida... Any idea when this coin was 'graded'?

Never seen anything like that. Appears to have a date of 1/12/52 in the upper right corner. "serial number" is on the flip not the "certificate" and if the date in the certificate is right the grade on the flip makes no sense because MS-63 did not exist as an "official" grade until around 1980.

There MAY have been a US Silver Dollar Society back in the 1950's but if so it was most likely a "club" created by a dealer selling silver dollars to the group on a monthly basis. The identification of Bill Gay as an "Advisor" would tend it point to that as well.

I found this on ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/U-S-Silver-...390782851941 - it looks like a 3 ring binder with 2x2 pockets.

It says "A service of First Coinvestors" and the text (by Walter Breen) is copyright 1973.

That leads to a bunch of data

* http://boards.collectors-society.co...93/site_id/1 - calls it a "a coin a month club" that was located in Albertson, N.Y. The rest of that isn't pretty (Whizzing, dipping, etc.)

* CoinWeek http://www.coinweek.com/commemorati...coinvestors/ calls them "the Columbia House of the not-so-rare coin industry". Also "Stanley Apfelbaum was a New York lawyer (eventually disbarred), life member of the American Numismatic Association (eventually expelled), and owner of the coin industry's first publicly traded dealership."

There is also a bunch of legal stuff

* http://www.leagletax.com/decision/1...%20v.%20CARR (1990, you have to pay commissions promptly just like wages)
* Suits they filed for non-payment by members
