STAFF ==== Not too sure this is the correct forum. I sell Ikes. What is the correct definition of UN-CIRCULATED? I need help with a good "definition" of the word "un-circulated" If I want to sell on CCF or ebay (or anywhere) === how many bag marks and scuffs etc etc., is fair to call a particular coin ( UN-CIRCULATED)? More to the point technically. Would un-circulated coins NEED to grade out at MS61? === MS62? Another issue on this subject === Can a coin have a small black gunk spot, and still be un-circulated? If I sell some coin(s) I just want to be on the safe side of a correct description. Want no negative feed back. About all of my Actions I have deliberately under described in order to have happy buyers. On ebay or CCF or anywhere one negative mark can kill your rating. Thoughts, Opinions, Ideas are all welcomed.

My definition of the term "uncirculated" is showing no evidence of wear. So to my definition, a coin could still be Uncirculated even with many marks, splotches. It could have been "Circulated" before, but as long as it doesn't show any wear it's Unc to me.
Has many bag marks, scuffs and hits? Low unc.
Pristine surfaces, full strike, only a bit of hits (not on the focal areas)? High Unc.
I think that coins could have black spots/ gunk in its surface and still be considered as being Unc or Unc details; just mention the gunk in the description and have a good pic.

This is a big gray area.I would think uncirculated would be a MS60. I find coins roll searching so called circulated coins and find ms60-67 and once in a blue moon one that would grade even higher. So if I find a circulated coin in MS64 while roll searching a circulated roll is it in uncirculated condition?,hence the gray area.Let's wait for the pros to post their views on this. John1 EDIT: If you have a Red Book it tells you about grades.AU55=choice about uncirc MS60=uncirc MS63=choice uncirc MS65=gem uncirc MS70=perfect uncirc

Quote: So if I find a circulated coin in MS64 while roll searching a circulated roll is it in uncirculated condition? This is not possible. A circulated coin (coin with wear)could not be a MS-64. But a coin with NO WEAR that could be graded MS-64 can be pulled out of a circulated coin roll. It does not matter where the coin comes, it doesn't matter that it has a lot of contact marks, all that matters for it to be uncirculated is that it not have any visible wear. Some people will say that if you pulled it from ciculation then it can't be unciculated. But if I pull a coin from circulation that has no visible wear, and send it into a TPG, they have no knowledge of how it was acquired. They will just look at the coin, see that it has no wear, and they will give it a MS grade.

So I really have no idea of the history on the coin. ========================================== Will add this. Many of my bags carry a VERY distinct THEME. One bag was full of AG 5-6? .999 or .9 One bag had 373(?) toned 1976 D Type one MOSTLY high grade One bag had many many strange weird PDM (or) error coins. One bag had many 1972 (P) === some were MS+ One bag was contained 1973 == 1973 (S) == 1973 (D)== ONLY One bag had 2 ASE Weird. Well you get the idea.

Do they get yanked from circulation to get put into that $1k bag? Irrelevant either way. If it shows no wear, it's Uncirculated. Or Mint State, whichever you prefer.

They were (about) all MS+++. To me that was a strange dump by a family member of a "collector." Or possibly a part bag of original(s) Who can say. Not me === I'm just the 216 newbie here.
