There is very little detail around the outside of the obverse of this 2001 LMC. The surface is also not smooth and lustrous. But towards the center the details are much sharper and there is cleaner luster.
Is this a weak strike, greased die, PMD/general wear? What would cause this? I'm curious what people think.
Thanks.

Looks like a Grease Filled Die and a nice one at that.

That is a nice coin, indeed! I thought mine was about as grease-filled as could be.

Thanks for the responses. The obverse looks very similar to examples I found of die adjustment strikes. But the reverse shows no weakness. So I guess it has to be grease or some other foreign substance.

That 1973 looks really nice. The inconsistent luster on my 2001 is not pleasing to my eye. But it's always exciting to find something that looks different.

Sourdough: I think yours is a Struck through a capped die error? What does the reverse look like? If it is normal, then it might be an capped die error coin and not a Struck Through Grease error. I see the indication of the corners of the base on the eye level area of the bust. The rims looks strong though. (Which would be unusual for a struck through die cap error.)

coop, you could be right but I lean towards grease-filled because of the clarity of the "L", "od We Trust", and the date (compared to the bust), as well as the rim shape as you pointed out. Reverse is normal.

I'm no expert, though.
Rest in Peace

I agree both coins are nice examples of Struck Through Grease. I wouldn't expect to see the sharp square rims on capped die strikes or die adjustment strikes.
