I'm thinking of collecting newer, nickel fifty cent pieces (1980's to present) with the hope that over time (10-20 years) their price will go up.

The conundrum is which coins will increase fastest...years with low mintages or years with fewer high quality coins (according to a TPG).

For example, would it make more sense to collect an MS66 (population of 1 according to ICCS) from 1985 (mintage of 2.1 million) or an MS66 (population of 23 according to ICCS) from 1990 (mintage of 207,000)?

thanks!

1985 is a very difficult year for gem grades, both in 50-cent strikes and nickel dollars... I would think that a grade rarity might be better than a hoarded, lower mintage...

The trend over the last few years has been more down than up. I personally wouldn't expect enough appreciation on these coins to make it worth the effort and continued depreciation wouldn't surprise me. For them to increase in value would require demand to increase more than supply. They are just not in demand as much as high grade Victorian coins are and I would think the supply is not yet defined. IE Most collectors will be happy with an MS65 and won't be willing to pay a significant premium to go to an MS66; and b) many people with these coins in their collection haven't gotten them graded since they are relatively recent and low value so the supply could continually increase over time instead of remaining relatively steady at current levels.
