HI, I tried looking for this information, but I am just wondering why is the 1921 nickel put on such a pedestal, where the 1916 among other nickels were also sterling, and low mintages, should logically have a similar survival rate as the alleged 200 survivors of the 21.

I am not that educated in all the ins and outs of figuring out survival rates, but I think that 200 out of 2.5 mill is low (less than 1/100th percent)

There must be some facts I am not privy to, for so many resources to list this coin for astronomical $$$$.

what am I missing?

Virtually all of the 1921's minted were melted before they were put into circulation
I'm sure you can read about it Charlton's. If you don't have a Charlton's, buy one, you'll continue to be in the dark about a lot of things until you do.

I'm waiting until 2021 when the RCM will find a few bags of 1921 - 5 cents tucked away in there vault that they forgot about. They will release them to the public in 2021 just like they did the 2012 BOC gold coins to celebrate the 100 years. Now every body will be able to have one and the RCM will make lots of money. If were really lucky they will find a few bags of 1921 - 50 cents and we all can have a 1921 - 5 & 50 cent sets.

There are way, way more 1948 dollars out there than 1921 5 cent pieces. There are good reasons why low grade 1921's cost as much or more than nearly the highest grade 1948 dollars.

1921 five cent is a real mystery coin. In May of 1921 it was announced that the five cent coin would be struck in pure nickel and would be the same size as the Usa coin, You can buy a 21 any day of the week in circ as long as you have the cash. just another Canadian money coin in my books. As long as you have the cash you can own it. quite similiar to a 48 dollar. It is quite possible there are way more out there than people expect. I have had the pleasure of owning 5 different pieces over the last 25 years.
