Can anybody tell how this coin was altered? It doesn't seem to fit any of the 1922 no D die characteristics. The only thing that looks suspicious to me is the "2" next to the 9 looks a bit funny. If the "D" was removed, they did a good job of it because there is no trace of it.

Moderator: If this belongs in the 'Variety and Errors' sub-form, please move it. The 1922 no D is considered by PCGS to be a minor variety.

Looks like a cast counterfeit in the first place.
Porous surfaces and terrible details (especially on Lincoln's bust).
The "1922" looks completely wrong.

Funny, cast never crossed my mind, but it's possible. Any test I can do? I tried a magnet and it doesn't stick to it.

Check the edge for casting seams.

And not even a good fake.
Key diagnostic (weak second "2" in the date) is not there.

OR possibly back in 1922 a few Mint workers realized that someday people would be going nutty looking for the plain 22 so they started making their own.

I remember reading about counterfeit coins made from Spark Erosion Dies back in the 1970's, and I believe a genuine coin was required to make the Coin Die.

It's been so long ago that I don't remember much of the article, but do remember 1955 Double Die cents was part of the subject also.

Maybe someone remembers this type of counterfeit and can explain it better than I can...

Ok, I took a photo of the edge. Is the faint line on the edge the casting seam? It weighs 3.1 grams. Could they have cast it in copper?

Just want to bump this up to get some confirmation that I'm seeing a cast seam on the edge of this fake coin. Thanks. Ed

The color also looks funny, like it was cast in brass. That line does look like a seam where the two halves of the mold fit together, but I'm no expert.

OK, thanks a lot. Probably cast in brass since the weight is almost correct. I really appreciate the help. Ed
