These are sellers pics, I am in the process of trying to clean this one. There is more of the red colour underneath the mud, amd where it is uncovered, it is slightly flaky in the same way that BD is.

I am hoping that once the mud has gone, I can wax the coin and retain the red colour, it is more terracotta in real life.

Can anybody see any future problems that this red might cause?

Looks like that might turn out to be an interesting coin. Love the color.

I have a vague idea where it is from, but I won't try and nail it until a bit more of the portrait has been uncovered.

Dont put it in olive oil or you'll darken it (eventually to black, and I suspect quite quickly here). Thats one for the DW and light brushing pile. If the red is flakey, it might be a tin oxide - I hear thats what the annoying red crud on Ptolemaic coins is.

Thanks Ben. I will try the light brushing. I think this might be one for a light coating of ren wax. I don't intend to remove much, but I need to see more of the portrait to ID it.
