For the past few years I have been buying mostly mid grade sestertii and only picking up a few stray small bronzes here and there when the price seemed too good to pass up. But all good things come to an end and of late I have been once again selling more than buying.
I still try to keep an eye out though and this green As of Severus Alexander caught my eye. The sellers 'pics' were not the best (outdoors and hand held) and I was hoping it might be better "in hand" (it isn't).
But I still rather like it and the Asses of the 3rd century are so very hard to find. It seems like despite the fact that Sear and RIC list plenty of varieties of 'Severan' asses you just don't see many being offered anywhere.

So the seller was/is in Romania which does not inspire a great deal of confidence on my part. But I did buy a 31 gram Republican "As" off this same fellow once when his feedback was around 20 ! I paid all of $20 (shipping included) for it and it arrived safe and sound and appears quite genuine. So this time I 'coughed' $46 and took another chance. Once again the coin showed up rather promptly with a friendly hand written hello note.
The portrait seems a bit weak (I was hoping for better .... looks a bit like Elagabalus too) and there is some pitting. But the reverse is a low end VF and the edges have the look of an As made from recycled bronze (impurities in the alloy tend to give them a coarseness).

One thing does trouble me though ...... the weight

12.38 grams seems a bit on the heavy side for an as. I have seen some rather under sized sestertii but not that small. David Sear dates the issue to AD225 so it is really too early for the drop off which occurs mid century. I would like too say I am 100% sure about this one but .......
I am feeling some small doubts

Opinions ? I am 100% sure of one thing,it isn't a casting ..... but is it real ?

AE As Severus Alexander
Rv P M TR P IIII COS P P S C
Fides Militum with two standards
25-6mm 12.38 grams
Sear 8070 RIC 430

Maybe I am just getting 'paranoid'. The weight seems too heavy but that may just be an error in the production. I like 3rd century (Severan) asses as they are rather hard to find and I was/am worried that my desire was clouding my judgement.
It is a 'nice' coin although it was no great steal. I probably paid close to fair market.
I prefer to steal them !

Hmmmmm. Well that one is rather 'buff' and I think a tad overpriced !

What I find quite comforting though is the weight given (12.44 grams) which is almost identical. Strange that the asses of this reign were so heavy. Checking my two Caracalla asses I find they are both just under 10 grams which I always believed to be the 'norm' (9-10 grams for asses with a dupondius usually coming in closer to 12-13).

So now I am relieved ...... I didn't get swindled

Hey everybody ....... check out what I found in Romania ! (being a cheapskate I still think I overpayed)

Come to think of it this coin did come from Romania. It was also probably 'found' in same. Romania in the 3rd century would have probably been a rather busy place with plenty of active legions in addition to the retired veterans colonies. Military reverse types like Fides Militum would have been used to pay these front line troops and skimping would have been ill advised for the new regime. After the debasement of the silver under Caracalla and the "swindle" of the antoninianus (1.5 the weight of the denarius yet worth 2) being a little generous with the AE's would have been a wise thing to keep the legions feeling appreciated. I imagine people at the time (esp the troops) were quite sensitive about things like the weight and purity of metals. They can't but have helped notice that the coinage was changing (mostly for the worse).

I think that the weight is OK for an AS of Severus Alexander.

Checked the VCOINS site, found 13 examples.
Deleted the heaviest and the lightest. The next heaviest 13.5 grams, the next lightest 8.8 grams.
Averaged the weight of the eleven remaining at 11.2 grams.

It seems that the quality control for weight was non existent.

Your coin is only about 10% above average weight for the group that I checked.

Nice coin FR and I agree with the others, I dont think the weight is very concerning, definately genuine in my opinion.

Thank you for your reassurances.
I think the country of origin was making me overly skeptical and I was doubting my own ability to spot a 'dud'.
The weight seemed a bit on the high side and I had a momentary crisis of confidence !
I had hoped the portrait would be a bit more detailed and perhaps this disappointment led me down the path of doubt. I recently sold a low grade Elagabalus As for slightly less so this is a bit of an upgrade in a sense.
The As denomination was my original area of concentration when I started out (Julio-Claudians) and I have a few decent EF's (some of which you have seen). I started buying mostly Sestertii's in the past few years but the lowly As is still my first love ......
I think I will go back to them as I have been downsizing of late.
