I am one of these new comer when come to collecting coins. I only collect the Modern NCLT coins so I don't know much, if anything, about silver dollars. Are there folks here collecting old silver dollar coins? Which year and how much content of silvers are in those coins? How do you determine the price?

Silver dollars up to and including 1967 are circulation coins with 80% silver (almost exactly 0.6oz ASW per coin). Starting in 1968 they were replaced by nickel dollars. In 1971 the first NCLT silver dollar was issued for collectors in a specimen finish and containing 50% silver by weight. In 1981 the first Proof and BU varieties were produced. The silver content was increased to sterling .925 starting in 1992. Starting in 1997 some Special Edition/Limited Edition silver dollars began to be produced in addition to the regular annual ones. 2003-2006 inclusive the silver content was increased to .9999 but then reduced back to sterling .925 for 2007-2011 inclusive. .9999 silver returned in 2012 and continues to date. Charlton Vol 2 is a good reference for coins and list prices. I believe CCN Trends also contains an NCLT section in their price list.

p.s. online price list for circulation silver dollars is at http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

There have also been a number of silver loonies issued over the years starting in 2004 but these are generally considered a separate category.

I am a newbie in Silver Dollars too.
But enough time in the forum and on the shows expressed my interest) in them (SDs)....so , as probably all novice in this field, started to combine my own "Commemorative" 6-cons SD set:

1935, 1939, 1949, 1958, 1964, 1967

(took as criteria the coin condition and overall pleasant look, do not mind the grade).

and yes, I know, that the 1948, due to it's low mintage, is the "king"

Those are very basics, but take a look at these Silver Dollars, you'll like them

I have a small SD collection as well, nothing serious. I do have a nice collection of those 1953-1960 sets. I enjoy collection those I think the value will hold over time. Most SD can be had for lower then their book value so I'd take my time and enjoy the hunt.

I love silver dollars. I have a pretty nice collection. only missing a few like 1947 and what not....the really expensive ones. Cool thing about silver dollars is you can get the later years like 61 to 67 for bullion price in UNC condition. Lots of the time when I want to add to my silver hoard I just buy junk silver dollars. Get it for Spot price with no premium and can just go down to my LCS to grab them, so no shipping fees. Iv been working on a set of min EF grade. I also like silver dollars because its not a huge collection (unless your after all the different varieties....there are lots :). Can acquire most the collection easy for decent prices....just those few that are really expensive

I chase after the Elizabeth II dollars that can be found in BU condition for melt value (I've seen specimen dollars, still in their plastic wrap, get tossed in the 14x face value bucket: of course I buy them immediately!). Everything else I'll buy if I see a good cheap deal - but I am mostly working on the set of circulating dollars from 1953 to 2014, all in BU.

Just a clarification to what kuh_85 mentioned, the 1967 silver dollar (Goose) was actually minted in 2 different silver contents, one is 80% the other is 50%. There is no easy way of telling which is which so make sure if buy at spot price, these are discounted.

The only way to tell is using specific gravity test which you can research on here, but its not simple.

Nice info kuh_85.

I didn`t have any silver dollar. Coincidentally, I was buying yesterday some stuff from asyn and to take advantage of the combine shipping, I decided to pick up some dollars. I got the 1968 BU PL $1 and the $1 1975 Silver.

Just curious, did you decide to buy them due to someone's year of birth?

I would like to get "mine", but the design not appeals to me.

Thank you all for the infos...
Just to clarify, so does the 1967 SD have 2 different silver content or not? also how much weight in the SD .. silver content wise so if I buy it at spot, I still need to know how much total silver is in the SD coin

Silveroid:

I tried to win the auctions with lowest prices between the $1 coins, even if I didn`t check out the prices in the catalog and I liked the coins of course. As my shipping fee was already at 50% discounted. Nothing related with a year of birth. I had thought before to start collecting $1 dollars so you've to start with something right :-)

All silver dollars from 1935 to 1967, both inclusive, contain 80% of silver, or 0.6 troy oz Ag.

I broke up my Double Dollar sets and put my Silver dollars together for a nice 20th Century Silver dollar display, 1935 - 1999 all silver. put the nickel ones in the book with the previous years extras. Every year a silver dollar was available is represented except 1948 and the multiple variants available through the years. The case and set can be seen in this thread
