MDD. The lettering is incuse. It's odd but on incuse lettering MDD shows as doubling with split seriffs and Doubled dies ten to look flat and shelf like. Exactly the opposite of what we are normally used to seeing.

If the devices are incuse, the machine damage will show as enlarged devices. On the mark on the "M" it is probably a coin nick (bag mark) in this area. Similar to the EPU on the shield cents. When an image is taken it looks like it is behind the devices, when it is not.

When the coin is rotated 90 degrees to the right you can see in hand the bag mark.
