I recently bought this 1851 Large Cent and after browsing the 45 varieties I think it is N-14. If someone can confirm that it will help with my question about the coin.

The question is about the 8 in the date which may be a re-punch, or post mint damage, or a 'low spot'. I'm not familiar with the term 'low spot' and don't know what it would look like. The Grellman book says that in the late die state 'there is a low spot in the field around the 8'. If it's an re-punched date then it's not an N-14.

Any assistance will be appreciated!

IMHO not PMD but if I had to wager a guess it was a strike through as well as other striking issues. That is a very nice one, I like it a lot!

I agree with the attribution, it is a fairly late stage N-14. I think what is going on with the 8 though is the result of a strikethrough.

Kelly and Conder. I was not familiar with the term strike through so I learned something new. Thanks!

if the area to the bottom left of the 8 is raised, I say it is displaced metal from PMD.

I just checked and it does not appear to be raised.
