I have been looking out for city view thalers for long time as they are hard to come by for price I can afford. I just got this one for a extremely reasonable price and whats more it is graded. However the catch is it is graded by Numismatic conservation service (NCS) which is part of NGC now. From what I gathered they were only grading problem coins , now termed as detailed. I cannot see any common problems such as cleaning, excessive hair lines, ex mount etc.. by looking at the coin. Of course I could be wrong on above and that's why I am posting here :) I cannot see the edge in this slab and I can see couple of rim bumps in the reverse.

So first question is how can I find the reason for detailed (problem)grading ? NCS mentions fire damage, corrosion etc..

Second question is what would you grade this as ?

Thanks.

Nice coin, no evident problem visible in the pics. You wouldn't really send a coin to NCS for something like cleaning or a scratch. It'd be more for corrosion, env damage and so on. I think the coin is around EF/AU. You're right though, these are pretty expensive problem-free. Nice coin

Thanks I call the NCS and they are refusing to give information to someone other than the original owner, oh well. I wonder if it would be worth to send to NGC as a cross over to get a detailed grade. Or maybe I should break the slab and send it to TPG :)

Hi there,

That is a beauty. And from the pictures it actually looks trouble free. Some cleanings though are hard to spot. If I were you I'd have it slabbed by a more reputable TPG. Like you say, NGC. I'd go with PCGS.

I'm curious to know how much you picked it up for?

Congratulations!

Epop!

With all due respect - and I don't mean that in a perfunctory way.

I'm curious to understand where you see hairlines in the photo provided?
They could well be there (hairlines), and that a cleaning has occurred is obviously not excluded, but please share your insight as to how you see the hairlines...

I see a few areas of potential suspicion, but nothing that's pointing to hairlines.

For me the light is too subdued to catch hairlines. I'd need slightly stronger contrast.

surface hairlines is a term used by TPG's which means lightly cleaned coin.
The coin it's obviously cleaned and that is what I mean by surgace hairlines

perhaps you can point to where the obviuos cleaning has occurred. I am trying to learn how to spot them as majority of the coins I have posted here are deemed cleaned, most of them are obviuos with surface lines or discoloring with dipping in chemicals. Thank you.

it's not easy for me to explain because of the language. The flashy surfaces are the main reason for mthis cleaned coin. Also the incosistent grry patina on the coin
