OK first off this coin is fantastic quite beautiful!!I did a lot of searching and ended up getting a high grade specimen off ebay, but its a tad bit of a controversial coin.. I wanted it because of my fascination with mintmarks and dies and the die making process.. this has a decent write up in the Cherry Pickers Guide that further intrigued me so to you folks who have the CPG you will find this coin on page 203 of fifth edition volume 2 hope my images do it justice!
(ok I am getting the hang of this image thing)

Awesome pictures... is that a misplaced mint mark? very cool I now have something new to look for when I look for 1952-s super-bird Washington quarter.

Looks like a small die gouge in the field in that area.

The coin is FS-501, listed in the CPG. Whether this is a D or not is questioned. This variety is also believed to be an issue that came from a master die, as there are multiple dies that produced coins with this anomaly.

If it was a master die issue most of the dies would have this. If it was hub damage, then many dies would have this. But to be on the hub as damage it would be hard for this to happen. So I view it as questionable as to how it happened. If it were on an EDS die state, then we would know it was from the hubbing. This coin is showing heavy die wear and polishings.

The write up in the CPG is quite good about how and why this coin happened..one thing for sure!! It gets alot of opinions as to the misplaced D is real or not..i think its a neat coin and I searched for it since the day I bought my first CPG gotta love a tad bit of controversy! Bazzzing!!!
