Where can I find info on grading Francs? One of my friends picked up a couple (3) Francs at a shop in Afghanistan on his last trip. He is looking for help on grading them. I don't have the coins in hand yet, but he will be dropping them off to me on Tuesday. He said that each of them are about the size of the top of a Coke can and that he has looked online and found that they could be worth as much as $2000. I told him not to hold his breath becasue most of the online prices are crazy asking prices or for mint examples.

I don't even know the denomination of the coins yet, so I don't have anything to start with on the grading. But I would like to start gathering some resources and at least find out what the metal comp is to say if the coin is even legit.

If anyone has any expertise on Francs, then I can post them up here for help grading. I may do it just to get everyone's thoughts anyway.

Francs in Afghanistan?
Sounds like a good chance that they are Middle East counterfeits.

Well, he brought the first in. It was a French Indochinese example of a horrible counterfit. The weight wasn't even close to right, the rim was all wrong, the edge reeding didn't quite line up. There was one more thing that was just a little bit off and I had some trouble putting my finger on it until I remembered that 90% silver doesn't rust. :)
