A senior San Jose postal inspector has been arrested on charges of stealing mail,
including rare coins, cash, prescription pills, gun parts and other items from parcels
that were torn open in transit, authorities said.

In a complaint filed in federal court in San Jose, investigators said (name),
instructed employees at the U.S Postal Service's San Jose Processing and Distribution Center,
to call his office or cell phone whenever valuable items were found loose in the mail,
having become separated from packaging during processing.

In 2013 and 2014, employees notified (name), a supervisor postal inspector, of such
items multiple times, according to a criminal affidavit signed by special agent (name)
of the Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General. (name) wrote that (name) took away
rare coins, loose silver bars, vials of prescription pills, $5,000 in cash and a
Joan Rivers collector's box signed by the comedian.

I hope that the guy gets his Joan Rivers item back.

I've heard a lot of stories like this where they sell the stolen items for drugs. It is a little strange that a senior postal inspector did it. That sounds pretty high up the corporate ladder lol.

I hope my Dansco #7165 makes it home!

Years ago I worked for a direct mail company. We took some new employees on a tour of the Post Office. The guy giving the tour said that if you stuck so much as a rubber band in your pocket you could get in trouble, up to and including termination. There were cameras and one-way windows everywhere. I used to feel safe when sending stuff through the mail. This sounds like he's one of the guys behind the camera. It begs the age-old question: Who's watching the watchers?

For myself, I know that every time I send a coin in for grading it will be in a well-taped box (small flat rate Priority) and fully insured. No more risky shipments in envelopes for me!

With tens of thousands of employees the USPS, UPS and FEDEX will eventually hire, promote, catch and prosecute a thieving employee.
