I know nothing about metal detecting. I came here for some help, but after reading a few posts, I am more confused. Can someone tell me what to look for in a detector that would be used mainly in the desert. Trying to find coins, but may be able to find a little of the Nevada mother Lode also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Bill,

Any modern detector priced between $300~400 new would suit your needs. More money will buy additional features you may or may not need and the ability to detect deeper. I have an old Bounty Hunter that I'd love to take to the desert and a newer White's that I tend to baby. Stick with trusted name brands (Garrett, Whites, Bounty Hunter, etc.) and find someone in your area that is already into detecting. It's fun to go out with others and most are very willing to share their knowledge.

Thanks Dave. How deep does the "normal detector" detect? If you upgrade what would be the depth? Do you think it is worth the upgrade. Just thinking as hard is the ground is out here I probably couldn't dig too deep anyway.

Most modern detectors will go 8-10 inches depending on soil conditions. Special coils can be added later to increase this to 12 inches if desired.
Most of my finds are between 2 and 4 inches.

Soil conditions will definately affect it's depth. Do you have a detecting club near you or do you have detecting magazines out your way? Magazines over here sometimes advertise 'detecting partners wanted'. If you hook up with somebody who already knows what they are doing you will learn much quicker what to look for, where to look & how to understand what your detector is telling you.
I've always found research to be as interesting as detecting itself. Do your research & you'll save yourself a lot of time & increase your chances of making good finds. However...pot luck is always around the corner!
