Picked this up from a pawn shop today for less than $50. Even though it's pretty worn and was an obvious ex-jewelry piece, I figured that under $50 for this key date wasn't too bad. I usually try to stay away from damaged coins though. Still don't mind if I ended up paying a little too much because it is a rather rare date. Thoughts on how I did?

This was perfectly good purchase. Numismedia lists at $480 in G-4. I think you did just fine for under $50. I would`ve paid that anyday. Shame though that it has that damage....

Good purchase.
It is still a pretty neat coin, even with the nasty rim dings and the fact that it has been holed/ plugged.

Thanks for the comments. Anyone else?

I'm really happy with this purchase even though it's a rough example. Surprised it hasn't been cleaned since it was an ex-jewelry piece.

I can see where it was holed and then plugged. For under $50, it looks like you did fine. Did they know it was a key date?

I'm pretty sure they did. It was marked 'RARE' on the sticker.

For <$50, if you can tell it's an 1855-S you did well.
