For a small 1.2 cu ft safe, is something like this necessary?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hydrosorben...em5b01ddf5b6

Or will cheap simple packets like this be enough?

Plus any packets I can glean from vitamin bottles etc

Silica gel is science, not magic; it will not keep sucking water out of the air indefinitely. As it soaks up more and more water out of the air it gets less and less effective, until it hits saturation point and cannot absorb any more water. The advantage of the first item is the indicating spot, letting you know when it's saturated and needs to be re-dehydrated, but an expensive self-contained widget like this is overkill, IMO; a couple of crystals of self-indicating silica gel would work just as well.

Of course, you could simply get into a routine where you regularly re-dry the gel packs, whether they need it or not. But heating the gel too hot or too often can cause it to degrade and lose its effectiveness.

The Hydrosorbent is exactly what I use.
A couple times a year they go into the oven for a couple hours and then they are reset for more moisture absorption.
