I recently acquired a Maldives 5 Laari (2012), a new issue, and I can't seem to find a KM# for it anywhere, even on Numismaster. Do they tend to fall this far behind on issuing new catalog numbers?

They do fall behind. I have modern coins (from the 1980's forward) that are not in the World Coins Catalog yet. I have a coin sitting on my desk right now from Tristan da Cunha from 2013 that is not listed yet.

Mexico has a lot of missing coins. India also has a lot of omissions. Some of the commemorative mint countries are also problematic (Marshall Islands, Liberia, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, etc.), but to be expected as sometimes there are questions as to if a coin is even an authorized minting. In some editions coins disappear for what ever reason.

When you consider their goal of catalog every coin minted in the entire world in the last five centuries there are bound to be some mistakes. Mints do not always work with collectors or publishers, so Krause may not even get information on a coin until a collector finds one.

There is a section in the preface that details how to submit a coin for the catalog, if you feel so inclined.
