I was browsing through a collection I have acquired last year and found 2 different pieces of 1 pfennig.

The first piece has the text "M.THERES.D:G.R.I.GE.HU.BO.REG." around the head of Maria Theresia on the obverse, the reverse is the austrian shield. The piece has a diameter of 20,5 mm and a weight of 2,3 grammes

The second piece seems similar, but has the text "M.THERES.D.G.RO.I.G.HU.BI.REG." around the head of Maria Theresia on the obverse, the reverse is the austrian shield. The piece has a diameter of approximately 20,5 mm and a weight of 2,5 grammes.

I noticed that Krause gives 2 different references: KM1979 and KM2002, but I do not how to differentiate between these two.

Does anybody have more information about those 2 types? Or references from a more specialized catalog? Thanks for your help!

The portrait on coin #1 extends closer to the coin's edge

Thanks for your feedback. Are there any collectors specialised in Austrian coins that can help me? I think the difference between the 2 obverses is too big to just call it "engraving differences".

I agree that the legend differences are too big to call engraving differences, but that's why I have many more types in my collection than listed in Krause (or Schoen).

I am also searching for the difference between KM#1979 and KM#2002 but unfortunately I don't think you found it. Looking on ebay the two legend variations appear before 1765 and KM#2002 is reported to be 1765 only.

It turns out there are at least four legend variations for the KM 1979/2002 Maria Theresa pfennigs:
D.G.R.--I.G.HU.
D.G.R.--I.GE.HU.
D.G.--R.I.G.HU.
D.G.--RO.I.G.HU.
There are also other variations (legend position, reverse design).
For Franz I didn't see any legend variations. (This is all from current ebay auctions.)

I believe many of the early Germanic pieces (esp. states) have numerous varieties which are not listed in Krause, especially among minors

I believe I solved the mystery of KM 2002. It's actually Franz I, not MY.

Cross-referencing Krause with Schoen it appears KM 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 are actually Franz I issues.

jdmern, I fully agree. Even if you go with Krause and Schoen there are many varieties not listed. The worst area I've seen is Erfurt/Mainz (where the books don't even agree on the country for the subset of coins they both list).
