I went to the bank today here in Canada. My favorite teller waved me over as I was getting some pennies from another teller. He showed me a 1967 Canadian Silver half, and said he had more. I excitedly went over to his wicket, and that excitement soon turned to regret. It turns out an elderly gentleman had brought in around $10 face value of Silver Half Dollars and Canadian $1 and $2 Bills, which are extremely hard to find. My absence of 3 weeks due to school exams had caused them to be all sent back to the Canadian Government for melting (Stupid Alloy recovery program). Fortunately, he did save me a nice 1967 Canadian Half, and 1955 Ben, and a 1942 Walking Liberty, along with some foreign odds and ends.
I can't blame the teller, he saved them for me as long as he could. Even consulted the head teller.

It's still killing me how the guy brought $10 of Walking Liberties and Bens and I didn't take them. AAAAARGH.

Cool! The 1955 Franklin has the lowest mintage in the entire series if it doesn't have a mintmark! That Alloy Recovery Program must stink though. Still, at least you saved some silver!

Nothing better than silver at face (Unless I suppose you could score gold at face )
I guess that's how we are, we find something nice and we're happy until we realize that we could've found something nicer.
I've had the same thing happen to me with some Georgian Nickels that my bank had (Had over 3 rolls apparently, I only ended up getting 6).

@zxcccxz Actually, I did almost score gold at face once. A big branch of a bank which I refuse to name to protect my finds , was holding a gold coin for me. They come in once a while, and the tellers usually snap them up immediately, but this teller was nice enough to hold one for me. Unfortunately,
I fell sick that weekend and could not go to the bank, and the next week they were gone. However, he felt bad for me and allowed me to take the Tim Hortons cup full of rejects from the coin counter, plenty of British pounds and Deustche Marks in there, along with other world coins. Even scored a 1952 Silver Quarter.

Dude. Unless you were in jail or the hospital you have NO excuse to not be camped outside the front door of the bank 5 hours early to get GOLD.

Hell, even if you were you still could have caledl your grandmother and tell her to run to the bank RIGHT NOW to get it.

I've never had any teller hold anything for me.

@jack jeckel

Camp out the bank for 5 hours on a freezing snowy night in CANADA? I'm not risking dying of pneumonia to get a 1oz Gold Maple Leaf for $50.
