I was just looking at the weekly best sellers, and noticed this coin is still available. I'm very surprised with it low Mintage 5,000 and a rare 2 Oz size. There was lots of hype in how well this coin would do on the after market. Compared to all it's hype, it seems to have plummeted like a lead ballon.

I've seen many ebay auctions finish under or close to issue price for this coin. I ordered 1 and after 3 weeks I returned it. I could only find 10 images. I found the coin too abstract for my tastes. It was too busy for it's large size, I found images crammed together and hard to distinguish. I had more luck finding the images on the box instead.

I did like the 2 Oz idea and I absolutely loved the diameter of the coin. It gives a nice canvass for the artist/ engraver to work on. The 2 Oz has a very nice feel in hand real substance.
I would like to see a yearly offering of a 2 Oz coin, and the price point was decent for 2 ounces.

I think the downfall of this coin was its abstract image! I doubt many collectors could really relate to this coin. I'd like to hear what others have to say regarding this coin? It's been out since February I believe. The price I feel was fair.
Please share your thoughts and insights!

You right, pocket change, too abstract.

If you remember, this coin was issued together with 2oz Perth Mint Zeus coin, which has ugly design and medal look.
There wasn't a hype no speculations. Both were available for some short period - just login and order.
But now the RCM coin sells near issue, while "Zeus" near $350-$400....

IMO - the demand on the secondary market.
Everyone knows Zeus, this is "wow" and kitschy, specially if only 1.500 units were minted. Together with this RCM coin was full of "some not clear signs"....if there was some howling wolf or Maple Leaf, or something trendy, like the "Zombucks" - it would be "wow" and popular.

Yes, I did buy it, with no doubts. and would like to see it as part of annual series.

Btw, not all these coins offered for issue.
One of the members have special COA. Only $500 and it will be yours.

the coin was issued side by side with 2oz Zeus from PM. They were certainly comparable in terms of size and lower mintage. The winner is....well, what I can conclude is, RCM did not respect market and paid penalty.

This is one coin that I really like and will be keeping/displaying etc , I know some think its too busy but when you really look at it closely its just amazing the amount of detail plus the large size I really like as well.
I may just start collecting 2 oz coins from now on and forget about all the over priced 1/2 - 1 oz coins with high mintage's.

I had forgot the Zeus coin was released at the same time. When comparing to the Zeus coin, the Mintage was most definately too high, especially for the chosen design. A design like the Tim Barnard coin probably would of done better at 2500. I feel the design is more suited for a 5 Oz coin, where there's more space. I guess a mural doesn't convert well to small coins. It's also probably a valid point, a person needs to enjoy abstract art to connect with this coin.

I was very excited when I ordered it, I couldn't wait for it to arrive. I did view it from different angles in various light. I even studied it with a loupe and microscope. Three weeks later I still couldn't connect with the coin, so I returned it. I did give it a fair chance, however, I found I connected better with the box. It was the first coin I ever returned, because I didn't like it. This is extremely rare for me to return a coin.

When talking to Cedric at the mint, he indicated they had a large waiting list for this coin. He also seemed surprised that I didn't like it. I find Cedric honest when talking about the popularity of a coin.
Last fall when talking about the popularity of the vintage Sman coin, he indicated the interest was low on the coin. Stating probably due to a plain look and being one of the vintage designs. I must say I prefer the vintage $10 Sman over this 2 Oz coin. I'm not even into comic book characters either. However, a well executed coin; is a well executed coin no matter the subject.

Contemporary art is a hard sell for coin collectors. This is the second contemporary art coin after the first 1 oz silver coin in 2013. Which did terrible as well in terms of sales and interest.

In fact all art coins seem to do badly. The group of 7 is now widely available for a large discount. People seem more interested in the box than the coin.

5000 is too many coins for the market to absorb for a niche market like art coins. Perhaps 2000 would have done better.

And it certainly did not help that few people outside of the Art World knew who Tim Barnard was. I never heard of the guy. Now, if there was series of coins by Picasso, that would be a different story.

I found the image for the 2013 art coin rather nice. I prefer that coin to the Tim Bernard coin. I absolutely treasure my group of 7 set. I really feel it's a Canadian heirloom set. I enjoy spending time with the coins and COA' s. I was very fortunate to pick up a set with case for a song, otherwise I couldn't afford it! I find it amazing that it never really struck accord with collectors. I had just started serious collecting after the 1st coin was released. I just missed being able to sign up for the subscription. It too is a relatively low Mintage.

I completely agree with you Pocket Change about the Group of Seven set. It's an excellent tribute to these iconic Canadian artists, and for my wife and I, the coins really do justice to the original paintings.

I'm glad that you are thoroughly enjoying the set in the cool display box.

I also found the 2 oz Barnard coin far too busy and passed on it. I'm also not much of a fan of modern art.

I should also say that we have always been puzzled as to why the Robert Bateman Moose series apparently flopped. We like the coins so much!

Ah well, there's no accounting for taste (including mine).

After long period, coin proved itself as "coin for serious collectors", not mainstream item (that could be bought by occasional buyer).
Of cause buy this I didn't mean, that the collector who decided not to get it - not serious.

If I will need money, will be "torn" between to keep and to sell.
Like it, but also not the fan of these type of art.

Silveroid, do you own this coin? I was sure from the tone of your comment. It does take an aquifer taste to appreciate this coin. It will be interesting to see where the auction ends.

Will post a picture late evening.

See, this coin , together with Perth Mint "Zeus" were the Mints first 2ozs (I do not count "Toronto" since it hasn't been struck by RCM).
So, comparing 2 coins I much liked Tim's coin and disliked Zeus. Reality with the general public shown the opposite, but here I do not care.
Just need to say, yes, the design bit messy, and with the happy owning of it, I (for example) will rank the 1989 Proof SML much above it. Nice, limited, interesting, unusual, but not a vital to have.

Pictures of the coin

Hope it will help to "feel" it:
(the coin has "frosted" + "Matte" proof finish on the reverse, with elements of the "mirror" (small rounds on the coin)

Just now, the Perth Mint 2oz coin ended with o bids!

Gods of Olympus: 2oz Hades coin

People just losing interest for all "innovative" stuff.
I though to buy it, but even for this price, while saw that there is no demand - didn't want it.

Well it is Christmas after all, most coin collectors buy for themselves through the year but Christmas is for giving so their money is spent else where this time of year. Plus the price of these isn't cheap as far as a Normal NCLT and while its only 1500 mintage its still over $300 bucks for one of these which is alot for your run of the mill NCLT collector.
