I thought keeping my American Silver Eagle inside my Airtight would prevent toning? Well today I'm selling my personal collection and got a surprise

http://www.ebay.com/itm/32145194662....m1555.l2649

(Have it on ebay)

So, what you guys think about this?
Does anyone know how this has happen?

Never cleaned, dipped, or created the toning however those people do it.

I noticed lots of toned coins- have dark purple on outside rim and then towards center is the blue tone.,.Is that rim circle the same size all around the circle.,.?

No the outer rim isn't the same size all around.

Huh, I never found a different color silver coin like this before. My only ones were golden.

Blue and violet toning is not uncommon on Eagles, here is one of mine-

That's very nice biokemis6.

They would have a premium if toned nice.
But not sure how much.

This sort of delicate toning is in a very transitory state as it progresses towards full grey patination.

It you wish to preserve it with this appearance, it needs to be locked up in an airtight acrylic capsule for maximum protection.

sorry for your problems, but to me these coins are just ugly, I had rather have a nice clean not cleaned coin as it comes from the mint.
toned coins just look dirty.

but thats just me

Question: Did the airtight that you kept this in have the foam ring? Or was it just the clear airtight capsule?

I do not find this 2014 ASE attractive, it just looks "dirty". It is only 14 years old, was it kept in a wet basement or something?
I don't see any kind of value attribution on this.
But you know it takes all kinds.

While it is to each their own, I Agree it is ugly, I would dip it immediately. To me it is like owning a new car and deliberately letting it rust.

Mine was kept inside the plastic air-tight without the foam.

By the way, this coin was sold to someone for 26 dollars. (Key Date)

How did you store the airtite? I'm VERY surprised to see it tone inside an airtite. I've had copper coins in airtites for years and they look the same as they did when I put them in. Of course, I rinse all my coins with acetone before putting them in airtites and then I store the airtites in ziplocks (usually 2) and Tupperware.

I stored them inside an envelope inside my safe.
I believe with the stream being like 100 feet away it causes dampness.
It's not a big one but normally is around one foot deep. Summer times 5 to 6 inches

Unless your safe s outside next to the creek, I highly doubt that had anything to do with it. Prior to being placed in the airtight it was exposed to something that has reacted with the silver. Thats all.

As for jprines, I rather like it. A different kind of toning than usual. Interesting.

biokemist, that is beautiful. I would snag one like that every time.
