There's a really nice 1962 Franklin at my LCS that is put with the business strike Franklins, but looks a lot like a proof. I'm not putting proof coins in my Franklin set, but I also don't want to pass up a perfectly good PL business strike. I know what PF and PL mean, I just need to know how to differentiate between the two.

Can't make a statement that will cover all situations.
Sometimes the die characteristics allow you to differentiate.
Sometimes the coins only show mirror characteristics on one side; that would mark them as PL.

I'm sure there are other diagnostics that would allow you to differentiate.
I don't collect proofs so wait for someone else to come along and add to my meager list.

On the Franklin in particular it is somewhat easy... On the reverse, take a gander at the eagle. It will tell the tale of the tail (and the wings on the left side as you look at it). Now that was the easy part. The strange part is there is there is rumor to be type 2 reverses for business stikes on years other than 58 and 59. I have not seen an example so I can not speak to it. I am sure I made that "clear as mud." Sorry.

fromms2244: What is it about the eagle that helps in identifying proofs? And are there different reverses for the 1962 Franklin half dollar?

The eagle will help to identify types 1 and 2 on proofs starting in 56 and as you mention, business strikes in 1958 and 1959.

However, these markers have nothing to do with identifying ms/proof/proof like.

Wish I had more to contribute as fas as identifying proof like specimens, but I'm not good enough to give any suggestions...

The proof reverse was altered part of the way through 1956. There were several tweaks but the most noticeable is the strength of the eagle. The head and chest are stronger and the feathers are more defined. The reverse proof die was used on business strikes in 58 and 59. But from 60 through 63 the eagle should be an indication of proof vs business strike. This shows the comparison well....
