Greetings! My father is giving us the old family pop-up camper for my kids to enjoy. I want to buy him a gift of about $100 to pay for the camper. He is a coin collector, so I figured this might be a good route to take. Does anyone have a suggestion for a coin in the $100 range that I should be able to find at local coin shops?

Thanks!

If he likes sets and some history, I recommend this...

Not quite $100, but I really like this set. It is still available from the mint.

It all depends on what he collects.

Does he collect copper? Get him a Large Cent or a Half Cent, a lovely BU early Lincoln Cent or a Unc later-date Indian Head cent.
Does he collect silver coins? Get him a nice MS-63 or MS-64 Morgan dollar or Peace dollar.
Does he collect gold coins? Get him a 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagle (a bit more than $100), or a 1/20 ounce gold coin (you will be able to find many different ones for less than $100).
Does he collect Commemorative coins? Get him a Baseball Hall of Fame commemorative dollar+half dollar, or a nice BU Columbian half dollar or a BU common classic commemorative coin.
Does he collect silver bullion? Get him some silver bullion coins, like the American Silver Eagle or the Canadian Maple Leaf.
Does he collect proof sets? Get him a 50s Proof Set or the current 2014 Silver Proof set.
The possibilities are endless.

I think you should find out what he likes to collect to decide what to buy for him. That way it would be the perfect gift. :)

So much depends on what he collects. Are you aware of what he collects and what he needs or wants? IF not, you may well be wasting your money. And if not knowing coins, you may well be buying a $50 coin for $100. You may well get a coin he doesn't want or need.
I suggest you sit down with him and discuss his collection and what he may want or need. Buying something not wanted may well be a waste.

Thanks for the reply. The kids are between school and camp and I haven not been able to look into this. I know he collects US Govt collector sets and coins. Asking him what he would like is useless as he would tell me that he wants nothing for the camper.

Thanks

Maybe you should listen to him then. Dads like doing things for their kids. Let him have that satisfaction. Maybe just send him a picture of you using it.
